Preserving Gilroy’s Prune Heritage

In 2014, Al Gagliardi in conjunction with the Gilroy Historical Society, and composed by Phill Laursen, published a booklet.  The booklet has pictures of all the prune box ends that he has collected in the Gilroy area over the past 60 years.  Al has donated his collection to the Miller Red Barn Association.

The goal of the Miller Red Barn Association is to be a source of agricultural and cultural history of southern Santa Clara County.  Signage and displays will reflect the history of the Barn, Henry Miller, the Miller & Lux Cattle Company, past inhabitants of the area starting with the native people, through the Spanish Land Grants, the varied ethnic immigrants who contributed to local agriculture in the 19^th and early 20^th centuries to today’s local agribusiness.  The barn will also serve Santa Clara Valley residents as a venue for local events such as winetasting, cycling, FFA fundraisers and family celebrations.

As a fund-raising event, we are offering to display the prune box ends of local families who would like to celebrate their family’s agricultural history.  A donation of $300.00 per box end will go towards funding the landscaping around the Barn.
